Lost Dreams

elephants dream
in twitches and kicks while roaming
in shivering herds
on tortured plains,
beaten up by the day
becoming nocturnal push backs
left to shudder under trees,
lost lambs to the slaughter,
seeking respite, sanctuary –
reserves have become hell’s plains
now that the devil hugs the red bush;
spilled thorns cry blood and cracked
floors are mopped
with grief ‘s
lucid dreams of a past
where memories become the intruders
in nightmares
that course their broken hearts.

I write poetry/prose/stories/short stories/verses for children/sketch/and have 6 chapters of a novel sitting there like that half eaten trifle in the fridge or bottle of Jack Daniels because something makes you afraid to eat it or drink... right now.. I am a proud Geordie from England's northern hemisphere and the beautiful city of Newcastle upon Tyne. I live with my lovely husband who came all the way from sunny California just for me, and my favourite animal, Bobble, our dog. I am a member of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth and wish we could all do more, especially today, when such a lot is wrong.

  1. I recently saw an incredible documentary about Giraffes. Shameful what they didn’t know aboit them. Population down to 90K in the world. I may have mentioned this to you already.
Ever see the video of the mother elephant kicking her stillborn until it breathed?

Lovely piece, Anita. Very thought provoking and we’ll written.

    1. It breaks my heart this whole epidemic across the wildlife spectrum.. We need sterner action and fast. I haven’t come across that, no. I will have a search. I have to limit myself hence the lack of writes, I get pulled down and I cannot afford that. Thanks, Michael.

  2. Our house is filled with elephant statues, we love them. It is so sad wildlife is endangered for sport, greed, and all kinds of evils out there. If mankind was the only species left, it would really be a world not worth living in.
