Sock Monkey had a day off and spent it very wisely. This is one of many outstanding pictures. Thank you, Monkey.
sweet whistles
give a voice to fringed
white snowflakes;
an illusion held aloft,
stopped on the bough
of gravity –
glinting sunshine
is the buttery Yellow Warbler
swaying for an instant
before flashing out
to swing on sprays of grape vines
like a yellow sunbeam
making daylight
pale into the shadows
hidden between the willows
in wet, lush marsh.
Song comes
from small, strong whirling leaves,
half green of spring,
half autumn yellow,
its restless flitting
and soft, low warbling trills;
become the melody
from a long journey –
on the wind they dreamt
of blossoms, buds, balmy air, sunshine,
and lilac speckles of home
where they blend like the petals of
grass gown daffodils.
